C 45

C 45

C 45, also known as C45 steel, is a popular medium carbon steel recognized for its good tensile strength, hardness, and wear resistance. It is widely used in engineering and manufacturing, offering a balanced combination of strength, machinability, and affordability. C 45 steel is often chosen for various industrial applications that require moderate strength and good wear properties.

Steel Properties

C 45 steel typically exhibits a tensile strength range of 570 to 700 MPa (82 to 101 ksi), depending on the heat treatment condition. Its yield strength varies from 330 to 580 MPa (48 to 84 ksi), influenced by the heat treatment process. The elongation is around 14-22% when in a normalized or annealed state. After heat treatment, the hardness generally ranges from 160 to 220 HB (Brinell Hardness), providing a good balance of strength and toughness.

Application

C 45 is widely used in the production of shafts and axles, thanks to its excellent combination of hardness and toughness. It is also used in gears, particularly in applications where high strength and wear resistance are crucial. Additionally, C 45 is commonly used in forging and heat treatment processes for making parts that require high surface hardness. Other general engineering applications include machine parts, spindles, bolts, and nuts, making it a versatile and cost-effective material for a wide range of industrial components.
