AISI 52100 / EN 31

AISI 52100 / EN 31

AISI 52100 and EN 31 are equivalent high-carbon chromium steels, recognized for their exceptional hardness, wear resistance, and toughness. These characteristics make them ideal for demanding applications, particularly in bearings and other high-stress components.

Steel Properties

AISI 52100 and EN 31 possess a tensile strength range of 750-1000 MPa (109-145 ksi), which can vary depending on the heat treatment condition. Their yield strength ranges from 480 to 850 MPa (70 to 123 ksi), while elongation is approximately 18-25% in a normalized or annealed state. After heat treatment, the steel typically reaches a hardness of 60-65 HRC, making it suitable for high-performance applications.

Application

These steels are widely used in bearings, particularly ball and roller bearings, because of their excellent wear resistance and fatigue strength. They are also employed in automotive components like axle shafts, gears, and transmission parts, where high stress and durability are required. In aerospace, AISI 52100 and EN 31 are used in critical engine components and landing gear, while in machine tools, they are essential in producing tool holders, cutting tools, and mandrels, thanks to their strength and wear resistance.
